Across Australia, October is safe work month. For us at InfraBuild, our safety vision is for all our people to be safe and to be able to return home fit and well at the end of each workday.
Core to this has been our continued investment in our safety culture and performance across the past five years.
We have fostered a culture of care where all our workers are encouraged to intervene if they identify a hazard and speak out if they identify things that make the job more difficult or less pleasant. As a management team, we are committed to encouraging these behaviours as well as keeping our teams up to date on the progress of actions to fix issues.
The results of this work have seen a 60 per cent reduction in incident rates as well as a 65 per cent reduction in the cost of injuries.
For us at InfraBuild, safety is not just about a safe and healthy workplace but also mental health and wellbeing. This safety month we have focused on our commitment to mental health and wellbeing for our people.
There are a range of initiatives to support the mental health and wellbeing of our colleagues, such as our WeCare program that is about addressing psychological safety and mental health risks in the workplace, as well as our Active Bystander program that empowers employees to intervene when they witness inappropriate or harmful behaviour, and our employee assistance program to support not just our colleagues but their families as well.
We have also commenced mental health first aid training, allowing our employees to recognise the signs of mental health issues and provide immediate support. Like traditional first aide, mental health first aiders offer initial help during a mental health crisis until professional assistance is available.
These mental health and wellbeing initiatives all form part of our wider safety program for occupational health and wellbeing called, You Matter, We Care. The program which covers psychosocial risk management, mental health, and employee well-being has recently been recognised by the World Steel Association at their annual safety and health awards.
We are humbled to receive such important recognition for our work, and it goes towards our ongoing commitment to provide a safe workplace for all our people.
All the best and stay safe,
Francisco Irazusta
