InfraBuild Darwin Turns 70

25 September 2023

InfraBuild Steel Centre in Darwin has celebrated its 70th anniversary, with a tribute to customers, employees and the supportive community.

Northern Territory Treasurer Eva Lawler mixed with past and present employees at the 1950’s themed celebration on Friday night which also included a look back at the history of the facility.

Minister Lawler spoke about the importance of InfraBuild’s involvement in the local community as well as its contribution to major projects.

Steel produced at the site has been used in major projects in the area including the Darwin Convention Centre, Casuarina Square and the CDU new City Campus.

The facility was initially a Stewart and Lloyds warehouse which opened in 1953 in Darwin, on the corner of Cavenagh and Bennett Streets, before it moved to Winnellie in 1965. In 2017 GFG Alliance purchased the business which was operating from its current location at Pinelands.

InfraBuild Interim CEO Dak Patel said it was important to mark the historic occasion.

“The InfraBuild Steel Centre has a strong and proud history in the Darwin community and we’re so excited to recognise that partnership as we celebrate 70 years” Mr Patel said.

“We’ve come a long way in the seven decades we’ve been in Darwin, continuously improving our processes and products to better meet customer needs and we look forward to doing that for decades to come.”
